Young adults have neither the tools nor the skills to carry out basic household maintenance, a new study shows, leaving them dependent on their parents for simple DIY.
Less than four out of ten younger people are capable of a selection of ten household tasks, according to the survey by a leading insurer, from changing fuses to putting furniture together.
Older residents above the age of 65 were four times more likely to be able to carry out these tasks than those between 18 and 24 years old - and the difference was even bigger on the larger projects such as tiling a bathroom.
But mums and dads were the first port of call for most young adults needing DIY advice. More than half went to their parents first, compared to the 43 per cent who skipped straight to the internet.
Perhaps it will not shock parents that eight out of ten thought their children were less well equipped to handle these tasks than they had been themselves at that age.
